General Mills started life as the Minneapolis Milling Company in 1856. The company ran several flour mills on the banks of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis. The company changed the name of its flour to Gold Medal Flour when it won a milling competition in 1880. In 1921, Wheaties was invented when a health clinician accidentally created the cereal by spilling bran gruel on the stove. The cereal was introduced to market in 1924, and began its association nine years later with sports teams by sponsoring baseball broadcasts on the radio.
In 1941, General Mills introduced Cheerios, which quickly outshone Wheaties in popularity. The puffed oat cereal was originally called Cheerioats, but was shortened to Cheerios several years later. By the 1950s, Cheerios had become the most popular cereal in the General Mills lineup. In 1999, Cheerios became the first cereal to be clinically proven to help lower cholesterol.
