General Mills, based in Minneapolis, is a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest food companies in the world. General Mills produces well-known brands such as Cheerios, Gold Medal Flour, Betty Crocker and Pillsbury. The Big G Cereals division of General Mills includes Cheerios, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Lucky Charms, Fiber One and Wheaties. During fiscal year 2011, Big G Cereals reported $2.3 billion in sales worldwide.
In 1941, General Mills introduced Cheerios, which quickly outshone Wheaties in popularity. The puffed oat cereal was originally called Cheerioats, but was shortened to Cheerios several years later. By the 1950s, Cheerios had become the most popular cereal in the General Mills lineup. In 1999, Cheerios became the first cereal to be clinically proven to help lower cholesterol. Other varieties of Cheerios include Honey Nut Cheerios and Berry Burst Cheerios. Consumers can save money with Honey Nut Cheerios coupons.
Dry Cheerios are also a popular choice for babies and toddlers, as the O-shaped cereal is easy for little hands to pick up and eat. Cheerios began advertising the cereal as a food for toddlers in 1974, and the cereal has continued its role in youngsters’ lives during the past several decades. The most recent innovation from Cheerios is Chocolate Cheerios, which was introduced in 2010.
